Svalbard Money is a Norwegian project that creates digital representations of historical scrip currencies issued by coal mining companies in the Svalbard archipelago during the 20th century. The system incorporates an educational engagement mechanism in which users accumulate virtual "coal" through completion of activities including reading texts, answering quizzes, and listening to podcasts. Users then spend Ether to mint NFT representations of these historical banknotes and coins on the Ethereum blockchain. The project expanded to include Bitcoin Ordinals, issuing typographic ordinals using the Grumant Bold typeface and made available on the Magic Eden platform. Physical copies of NFT metadata are archived in the Arctic World Archive located in Mine 3, Longyearbyen.
